Yoga and Mindfulness Practice: Honoring the Sun

We’re all familiar with the sun salutation sequence, it’s such a great way to start the day - being grateful for the life giving sun, invoking vitality and serenity. 

You may want to focus on the virtue of freedom as you practice, with a focus on the sun. Remembering the sun, we can know in our hearts that light always follows darkness, and hold hope and commitment in our hearts for equality consciousness, detachment and divine power.

As part of your practice, consider adding a meditation on the inner sun, or chanting mantras related to the sun in your morning practice. One of our favorites is the Suriya Gayatri Mantra. It invokes both the Goddess (Gayatri) and the Sun (a masculine deity or aspect) for a delightful, balanced welcoming to the day.

Traditionally these mantras are chanted108 times.

Om bhur, bhuvah, svah
tat savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dhimahi
dhiyo yo nah prachodayat

Om. Earth, Sky, and Heaven!
We recall within ourselves and meditate upon
that wondrous Spirit of the Divine Solar Being
Awaken and guide our inner vision
