BuddhiBhakti – Q & A with Amelia Taylor











Many of you know Amelia from her IG screen name of yog_a_melia. The vibrant energy from Australia & mum of 7 (yes 7),  that keeps our buddhi on the mat with her monthly challenges. She was kind enough to answer some questions, share with us her rocking yoga playlist, and tell us about why yoga is not just the asanas, but it is her lifestyle.

Share with us how you started practicing yoga and why? What is your yoga story? 

I started practicing yoga a little over a year ago, firstly because I thought it would be a great “style of fitness” to “get fit” and at first it was! Then as time went on I realized there was so so much more to yoga than just going through the movements, and I began to fall in love with yoga. It became my “me” time, my medication to relieve daily steer and anxiety, my way to connect with my inner self and the universe. Now I don’t like to go even a day without yoga and I incorporate it into my everyday life with forward folds to pick up my children’s toys and tree pose while I wash my hair in the shower.

 What inspires you and motivates your practice?

Other people’s practices inspire me a lot! The Instagram yoga community has been a large inspiration to my practice and a couple of close friends who also practice inspire and motivate me on the days where the couch looks too inviting. Most of the time though, my love for practicing is my motivation. It’s very easy to run to your mat of being there is where you live to be!

What do you have to have when you practice? Like a certain type of water, tea or a favorite mat or strap?

I have to have music when I practice, even if it’s just the radio. So may years of a noisy house full of children has made silence unnatural to me. The other thing that is a ritual for me is to light a scented candle or oil burner while I practice and have a window open, even in winter, I love fresh air and nice smells filling my lungs as I breathe through my practice!

Do you see becoming a yoga instructor in your future?

I am yet to become a yoga instructor, although it is an aspiration of mine one day. At the moment I don’t have a lot of spare time to become an instructor and being a mum to my 7 kids is more important than Yoga Teacher Training at this stage of my life.

What is your favorite yoga posture? Why?

Ooh I couldn’t give you just one! There’s too many that I love! This week it’s probably forward folds, but last week it was Firefly and the week before it was Lizard and the week before that it was Pigeon. So my favorites constantly change depending on what area is calling for my attention most.

Favorite song on your playlist right now?

Waves by Robin Schulz because it is so summery and relaxing!

Don’t laugh but it’s “Don’t cry over spilt milk” because it keeps me grounded.
What do you do when you are not practicing yoga?

Be a mum and a wife! All the exciting things like clean the house, take the kids to and from school, change nappies, do laundry, etc. and chat to friends via phone in-between the chaos.
If you could go back to a place/time in your life and re-live it, what would it be and why?

When I was a teenager because I spent all those years just wanting to grow up instead of enjoying the now.
Biggest life lesson?

Not to doubt myself or my instincts!
What is your life mantra?
